Fall 2007

Dear Dean Health Plan Member,

Photo of Robert L. Palmer, P.Eng.; President and CEOWelcome to fall in Wisconsin. Is there really any better place this time of year? Especially when you consider the excellent state of healthcare in Wisconsin. Hospital care, patient safety and healthcare associations in Wisconsin consistently rank among the top in the nation.

We were pleased to see that Wisconsin has been ranked first in the nation in healthcare quality by the U.S. government’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The rating is based on 129 quality measures in four care settings. It gave Wisconsin the highest overall score among 50 states and the District of Columbia. Wisconsin hospital care was also ranked first in the nation. Wisconsin was also among the five best-performing states in ambulatory care and ranked in the top 25 percent for nursing home care.

In addition, the Wisconsin Hospital Association Inc. announced that the state’s hospitals consistently rank among the best in the nation. The report shows that 13 states, including Wisconsin, emerge at the top of the overall performance rankings on multiple indicators.

CAHPS Results

This is also the time of year when we look forward to releasing our Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®.) scores with our members. We appreciate everyone who filled out and returned the survey. Your feedback is crucial in enabling us to benchmark our services and programs and identify opportunities for improvements and enhancements.

I was delighted to see that our members are rating the personal doctors and specialists significantly higher than in years past and that many more of you are getting the care you need more quickly. We’ve been working diligently with all of our network practitioners and providers to encourage improved access and better coordination of care and communications with patients; it’s gratifying to see that the efforts throughout our system have improved your healthcare experiences.

New to the survey this year was a series of questions about how often doctors talk with you about the choices for your treatment or healthcare. Your responses show that our doctors are informing you of the pros and cons of your options and asking you what would be best for you. Our members also indicated several areas where we continue to have opportunities for improvement, including making it easier for you to see a specialist and find information about how the health plan works and about the costs of services and equipment.

We will communicate your survey ratings to all our network practitioners and providers and continue to work with them to make your healthcare experience more valuable and satisfying for you into the future.
