Fall 2009

Dear Dean Health Plan Members,

Photo of Robert L. Palmer, P.Eng.; President and CEOThroughout the years our main goal has always been to make sure you are satisfied with the quality of health care coverage you receive from Dean Health Plan (DHP). To measure that goal and to identify areas of improvement, we annually solicit your feedback through the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) survey results. The questionnaires are distributed randomly via mail or phone by a third party and request that members score DHP on various measures, including network doctors and specialists, getting needed care, quality of care and claims processing.

High Ratings from Members

We recently received the 2009 CAHPS® survey results and I am thrilled to share with you that we saw our overall results improve from 2008. DHP improved in all four areas: overall health plan, overall health care, personal doctor and specialist care.

DHP also administers the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) annually. HEDIS® is a collection of quality measures that evaluate clinical care and services delivered to you, our members. It covers several aspects of healthcare, including preventive care, chronic illness treatment and access to care. This year, DHP maintained improvements made last year in areas such as well care received by children and adolescents, follow-up care for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications and antidepressant medication management.

Goals for 2010

We take the results of these surveys seriously and use the results to set goals and standards for the upcoming year. After reviewing this year’s results, areas we would like to see improve in 2010 are mental health follow-up care and timeliness of prenatal and post-partum visits. DHP is committed to providing our members with the highest quality of care, and as always, we’ll strive to enhance these and all other aspects of your health care coverage.

Beginning early next year, we will again administer the CAHPS survey. If you receive a survey or a telephone call, I urge you to take a moment of your time to help us better understand how we can serve you. I encourage you to share with me your thoughts and feedback throughout the year. You can call me at 800-336-3302, send me a letter or e-mail me at dhp.ceo@deancare.com.

Sincerely,
