This issue highlights Dean Health Plan’s (DHP) pharmacy benefit manager, Navitus Health Solutions (Navitus). DHP founded Navitus in 2003 to provide a pharmacy benefit program that offered the same commitment to quality of care and service excellence employed by the DHP medical program.

A Unique Model

Navitus offers a unique business model founded on the principles of complete cost transparency and service excellence, which is very different from the business model employed by traditional pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Navitus negotiates the best possible discounts on drug products and passes these cost savings directly to the member. In stark contrast, traditional PBMs often mark up drug prices and keep those dollars, which results in much higher costs to members and plan sponsors as well as drug-product selection that may not be in the best interest of the member. With the Navitus pharmacy benefit program, the member always benefits from the lowest possible drug cost for the drug product that is clinically appropriate for his or her therapy.

The “Navitus Model” has not gone unnoticed, as demonstrated by the following successes:

  • In its first three years with Navitus, audited findings show that the “Navitus Model” saved more than $157 million for the State of Wisconsin pharmacy benefit program.
  • In its first year with Navitus, the State of Minnesota pharmacy benefit program experienced savings of more than $8 million.
  • Navitus’ commitment to quality, affordable health care and service excellence is reflected in a consistent member satisfaction rate of 95 percent or greater.

Navitus has experienced tremendous national growth and now proudly serves the pharmacy benefit needs of more than 850,000 members across the United States.
