New Guidelines for Prostate Cancer Screening

The more recent recommendations for the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test advise against screening men ages 75 and older. It also says that men younger than age 75 should discuss the benefits and risks of a PSA test with their physician.

These new guidelines were written by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which has found that screening for prostate cancer in men ages 75 and older provided few health benefits but could lead to substantial physical and/or psychological harm.

For men younger than age 75, the Task Force says that current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of prostate cancer screening.
