Know Your Numbers

If you have high blood pressure, these tests can help you keep the condition under control:

  • Blood pressure check. You should have a blood pressure check every time you visit your physician. Your physician may also ask you to monitor your blood pressure at home. You should aim for a blood pressure of lower than 120/80 mm Hg, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Cholesterol test. Get your cholesterol checked at least once a year. For a healthy heart, the AHA recommends your total cholesterol should be lower than 200 mg/dl. For people who are at high risk for heart disease, the target goal for LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol is 100 mg/dl or lower. For HDL, or “good,” cholesterol, the target goals are 50 mg/dl or higher for women and 40 mg/dl or higher for men.
