Arm Yourself with the
Vaccines You Need
Vaccines You Need
Immunizations are not
just for kids. Adults need
vaccinations, too. Here are
some vaccinations you may
want to consider:
- Tetanus and diphtheria. You need a booster shot every 10 years to protect yourself against tetanus and diphtheria.
- Shingles. Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. You can get it if you ever had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine. A new vaccine called Zostavax can help prevent shingles or reduce the pain that comes with the rash. Experts recommend the vaccine for people ages 60 and older.
- Influenza (the flu). People ages 50 and older should get a flu shot every year. So should people who have a chronic illness, such as heart, lung, or kidney disease; diabetes; or a weakened immune system. The best time to get the flu vaccine is between October and mid-November, but it is never too late.
- Pneumonia. Generally, the same people who need a flu shot should get a pneumonia shot. Your physician may want you to get a booster shot every five years.
Call your physician today to schedule a flu shot and make sure that you have all of the vaccines you need.
