Overcome Incontinence

Photo of a woman Stress incontinence is the loss of bladder control. It can be upsetting, but it is common. Many people have this problem, and it can be treated.

Common Causes
Stress incontinence can be caused by chronic illness, excess weight or even some medications. It usually occurs during activity such as coughing, laughing or exercise. In women, it may be caused by pregnancy or changes related to menopause. In men, it may be caused by an enlarged prostate.

What You Can Do
Only a physician can tell you what is causing incontinence. He or she can help you find ways to correct the problem, including:

  • Exercises to strengthen pelvic muscles
  • Methods that may help train your bladder, such as going to the bathroom on a schedule
  • Changes in your diet, such as drinking less caffeine and alcohol

In some cases, your physician may suggest surgery. Or he or she may prescribe a medication. Find out whether a medication is covered by your plan. Check your formulary on our Web site at www.HorizonBlue.com/Medicare or call the toll-free number on your Horizon BCBSNJ ID card.

Talk with your physician about any health concerns. Conditions such as bladder control do not have to affect your quality of life.
