Managing Your Heart Failure Medications

Photo of medicinesSeveral different types of medications are used to treat heart failure. Ask your physician for the generic versions of these medications if they are available to help save money:

ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. Generic available. These medications keep the body from producing angiotensin, a substance that makes blood vessels tighten and raises blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure, in turn, reduces the workload on the heart.

Angiotensin II receptor blockers. No generic available. These medications affect angiotensin, the same substance targeted by ACE inhibitors. But in this case, the medications work by keeping angiotensin from having an effect on the heart and blood vessels.

Beta-blockers. Generic available. In heart failure, the heart tries to make up for weakened pumping ability by beating faster. This puts added strain on the heart. Betablockers reduce the effects of chemicals that speed up the heart rate.

Blood thinners. Generic available. These medications keep blood clots from forming, reducing the risk for a stroke. Blood thinners may be prescribed for people with a history of atrial fibrillation (rapid, uneven contractions in the heart’s upper chamber, which can lead to clot formation), blood clots in their legs or lungs, or stroke.

Diuretics. Generic available. These medications, also known as water pills, help the kidneys remove more water and sodium from the blood. The heart does not have to work as hard when there is less fluid to pump throughout the body.

Potassium. Generic available. This mineral helps control the rhythm of the heart. It is also necessary for the muscular and nervous systems to work properly.
