It is often not easy to quit
smoking, but you can help
yourself by taking steps
to make quitting easier.
Here are some ideas:
Exercise. You may need to limit your activity level because of COPD, but do what you can. Just taking a walk may help reduce your withdrawal symptoms. Ask your physician about exercise programs that are designed for people with COPD. Be sure to talk with your physician before starting any exercise program.
Eat well. Snack on raw vegetables and fruits to help take your mind off smoking.
Smoking-cessation aids. Nicotine patches and gum are available at the pharmacy to help you quit smoking. They may lessen your withdrawal symptoms without harming your lungs like smoking does. A new prescription medication sold under the brand name Chantix may also help you quit smoking. Talk with your physician to learn more about which methods are best for you.
