Everyday Self-Care Tips for COPD

When your lungs do not work as they used to, even day-to-day activities can be frustrating. But there are some simple things you can do to help you function better when you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD):

  • Stay active. Whether you simply walk around the block or around your living room, getting regular exercise can help you breathe easier and stay in shape. You may want to join a COPD rehab program to add new exercises to your routine.
  • Keep your shots up-to-date. This includes getting a yearly flu shot and a pneumonia shot every five years.
  • Eat smart. Good nutrition can help keep your muscles strong. Avoid eating large meals that leave you feeling full and constrict your breathing. Instead, consider eating six small meals a day.
  • Take medications as prescribed. Ask your physician or pharmacist what your medicines are for and how you should use them. See a pulmonary specialist every year to make sure your medication plan is up-to-date.
  • Use your oxygen. If your physician prescribes oxygen, use it as directed. When using oxygen, try to inhale through your nose. Inhaling through your mouth can be very drying, and some of the oxygen may be wasted.
Work with your physician and take the best possible care of yourself. This will enable you to preserve your strength for a fuller life in the years to come.

Respiratory illnesses such as colds or the flu can block the airways. Make sure to get a flu shot every year and the pneumonia vaccine every five years.
