Seeking Ways to Manage Alzheimer’s

Acure for Alzheimer’s remains elusive. But research is beginning to shed light on the condition, off ering hope for the future. Scientists are studying several ways to possibly prevent or delay Alzheimer’s. However, while promising, none of the following therapies has yet been proven:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen. Early studies showed that people who take certain NSAIDs have a lower risk for Alzheimer’s. But newer research shows conflicting results on whether NSAIDs actually can lower Alzheimer’s risk.
  • Antioxidants, such as vitamins E and C. Antioxidants may attack free radicals, substances that seem to play a role in aging and disease. In one study, vitamin E appeared to delay progression of Alzheimer’s disease by six months.
  • Ginkgo biloba. Some studies show that this herbal remedy may help treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Researchers are also testing its value in preventing or delaying Alzheimer’s.
  • Alzheimer’s vaccines. Scientists are testing a vaccine that seems to prevent the protein deposits in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s.

Speak with your physician before trying any of the therapies listed in this article. You and your physician should work together to find a course of treatment that is best for your particular situation.
