  1. Photo of a prescription bottleDirections: This section tells you how to take the medicine, how much to take, how often and for how long. Make sure you know what these instructions mean. For example, if the directions say to take the medication every four hours, ask your physicianPhoto of a prescription bottle or pharmacist if that means throughout the night as well as during the day.
  2. Expiration date: Your prescription medicine lists a “Use Before” date that tells you when the medicine is no longer good. Check this date before you take the medicine. Throw away expired medicines.
  3. Photo of a prescription bottleWarnings: This section tells you foods and activities to avoid when using a medication. It also lists possible side effects, such as drowsiness or dizziness.
Always check for your name on the bottle before taking a medicine. Make sure you are taking the right one.
