How to Read a Medicine Label
Reading and understanding the labels on the medicines you need can help you take them safely and effectively. Let the label be your guide.
Directions: This section tells you how to take the
medicine, how much to take, how often and for how
long. Make sure you know what these instructions
mean. For example, if the directions say to take the
medication every four hours, ask your physician
or pharmacist if that means throughout the night as
well as during the day.
- Expiration date: Your prescription medicine lists a
“Use Before” date that tells you when the medicine
is no longer good. Check this date before you take
the medicine. Throw away expired medicines.
Warnings: This section tells you foods and activities
to avoid when using a medication. It also lists possible
side effects, such as drowsiness or dizziness.
