Manage Your Medicines

Photo of a senior using a computerIf you take one or more prescription medications, you should know how to manage them properly. This means following your physician’s instructions and taking medications exactly as prescribed. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Read the label carefully. Follow the directions. Read any warnings. Do not take more or less of a prescribed medication than directed.
  • Make sure you are taking the correct dose. Make sure you have enough light to see that you’re taking the right medication in the correct amount. Use a dosing spoon for liquid medications.
  • Make sure you have the correct prescription. Talk with your pharmacist if the medication does not look familiar.
  • Do not take a medicine prescribed for another person. Never offer your prescription medication to anyone else.

Know What You Take
Take steps to learn about the medicines you are taking and why you are taking them. When you have a prescription filled, ask your pharmacist what the medicine is used for. Give your physician a list of all the medications you take, including the name, dose and directions. This can help prevent harmful interactions.

Avoid Problems
Talk with your physician or pharmacist if you have questions about the medicines that you take. Never stop taking prescribed medicines unless your physician tells you to do so. Call your physician or pharmacist immediately if you have any side effects or notice other problems when taking a medication.

Questions
Every time you use a medicine, read the label, check the expiration date and follow the directions carefully. If you have questions, ask your pharmacist or physician.
