Ellen Landsberger, MD, MS, is a high-risk pregnancy specialist and director of the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program at Montefiore Medical Center. This innovative program provides specialized care to pregnant mothers who have type 2 diabetes — the most common type of diabetes — or who develop gestational diabetes during their pregnancies.

“Diabetes is a tremendous problem that can harm pregnant women and place their fetuses at risk for a host of problems,” Dr. Landsberger says. “We try to intervene and help women and families by providing a broad array of services before, during and after their pregnancies.”

The state of New York recently designated Montefiore as a Diabetes Center of Excellence and awarded the medical center with a prestigious five-year grant to develop and implement a program designed to improve outcomes for mothers and babies. As part of the program, Montefiore caregivers will make home visits to encourage women and families to focus on nutrition, physical activity and diabetes prevention.

Dr. Landsberger is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and received a master of science degree in Human Nutrition from Columbia University. She performed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at New York University-Bellevue Hospital Center and completed a fellowship in maternal–fetal medicine at George Washington University Medical Center. In addition to her clinical role at Montefiore, Dr. Landsberger also serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
