Q&A with Richard Kraut, DDS: Dental Implants

Photo of a man in a dental chairQ: What are dental implants?
Dental implants are titanium devices that replace the roots of missing teeth so that we can attach porcelain teeth. Implants have the most natural look and function of any tooth replacement option available. They are permanent, although the porcelain teeth need to be replaced about every seven years.

Q: What should I expect during my dental implant procedure?
We sedate most patients, so you won’t feel any discomfort when we attach titanium implants to the jawbones with screws. You are typically able to return to work the next day. It takes three to six months for the bone to bond to the device. After it bonds, we attach porcelain teeth to the implant.

Q: How do I know if dental implants are right for me?
If you’re missing any teeth or about to lose a tooth, ask your dentist about dental implants. We can use implants in patients of almost any age. For example, we’ve placed implants in children as young as 6 who have no or few teeth because of congenital conditions, patients who have lost their teeth due to accidents or injuries, middleage people who have lost one or more teeth, and seniors who are missing most or all of their teeth.

Q: How does Montefiore offer such afordable prices?
With more than 80 residents undergoing training at Montefiore, we have one of the largest dental education programs in the country. In addition, our oral surgeons and residents perform more dental implants than any other facility in the nation. These thriving programs make it possible for us to offer dental implant services that are among the most affordable in the New York metropolitan area.

Q: How do dental implants make a difference in patients’ lives ?
Many of my patients tell me that their dental implants have changed their lives dramatically. They can smile again. They have more confidence and self-esteem because their “teeth” look good. Patients’ health improves because they’re able to chew food and eat a balanced healthy diet.
